Frigid Fools Race Day Instructions

Posted in Pages

Greeting everyone

Current weather predicts a low of 30 and a high of 47 on race day with partly cloudy skies.  Chance of rain or snow 0%  Oh well, we can't have everything!  Below are some last minute details regarding the race.  We have several returning for their 2nd year of punishment including last years winner Greg Fraze.  There are currently 20 folks signed up and we expect a few more before all is said and done.  This is a pretty low key race and it's certainly a small race but it is a lot of fun!  Everybody that did it last year had a blast.

Make sure and bring some warm dry clothing to change into when you are finished.  Once the last racer clears the course we'll have an awards ceremony and everyone will get a special memento so you can prove to everyone you actually did this thing.  You will also be treated to chili and some other goodies after the race.  But best of all, you get the opportunity to hang out with people as foolish as you are for picking a race in February.  So enough of that, below are your race day details....

The address for Angel Mounds is 8215 Pollack Ave, Evansville, IN  47715.

Visitor center gates and transition area open at 9AM.  Race starts promptly at 10am.  (Note, you cannot even get into the parking lot until 9AM so there is no need to try and arrive earlier)  Please allow yourself enough time so you are ready to race at 10am.  Please park at the northwest corner of the parking lot as indicated by the photo.  You can set up your transition in the grass next to the starting line or the back bumper of your vehicle if you prefer.

You will be required to wear a bib # on the front of your running/cycling attire.  It must be visible and on the front so I can time your race properly.

The race will consist of a 5k run, then a 15 mile bike, followed by another 5k run.  Both the run and bike courses are "out and backs" and are on paved streets.  They are as flat as a pancake.  Note the bike leg will consist of two laps on the out and back course for a total of 15 miles.  The courses will be marked sufficiently.

There will be an un-manned aid station with water (or frozen water) ,& bananas, just prior to the run turn-around.  The table will be set up on a gravel drive on the east side of Pollack just before the run turn-around.  Please use the trash bag-provided.  No drop zone for garbage here. There will be bright yellow signs marking the run and bike turn-around points.

There will also be another table with water and banannas just beyond the starting line that can be accessed in or out of transition or when beginning your 2nd lap on the bike.

IMPORTANT!!!  This is not a closed course.  Fortunately, the traffic on these streets is light  BUT  Please!  Use caution and good sense when navigating the course. There are a couple intersections that you will be required to go thru on both the bike and run legs.  It is entirely up to you to make these turns safely.  We WILL NOT have traffic monitors at these intersections to assist.  As your race director I would also ask that everyone run "facing traffic".  For safety reasons.

Here are the course maps:

Run Course

Bike Course (2 laps)

Drinks and post-race meal will be provided once you complete your race.   (Chili and some other goodies are on the menu)  There will be a brief awards ceremony at the shelter house as soon as the last participant clears the course.  Awards will mostly be bragging rights and front page recognition on our website! And if nobody whines about their fingers or toes being cold, we may just offer up some type of proof you did this thing so you can go back and brag to all your buddies about how you coped with stage 2 frostbite.  Now how cool is that!!! If the streets are iced up on the 18th, the event will postpone to the following Saturday (25th) at the same time.

OK everybody, that about sums it up.  Get some rest Friday.  This is a tough race!  The prevailing statement people made as they crossed the finish line last year was "THAT HURT".
